Stop Lateraling, Start Integrating

Stop Lateraling

Law firms love courting. Wining and dining and landing that perfect partner or practice group – the fun is in the chase. And law firms are good at courting -- so good, in fact, that more lawyers are changing firms than ever before.

But how many are staying? After a couple of years, many laterals move on to the next suitor. That’s expensive. It’s a burden on clients. And with each lateral departure, the remaining partners grow more reluctant to invest time in the next group of laterals to come in the door.

What’s the cause of all this lawyer liquidity? Some blame the new lawyers themselves, itinerant advocates who look good on paper and interview well, but never deliver the goods. Or the opportunists, always looking for greener pastures.

Sure, those folks are out there, but of the hundreds of laterals we’ve worked with over the last 15 years, the vast majority has proven to be earnest, hard-working, and exceedingly competent. The real deal.

Law firms hate honeymoons. So why do so many of these marriages fail? Because many laterals are ignored soon after they say “I do.” Oh, there’s the PowerPoint introduction at the first partner meeting, a lunch or two, and a flurry of emails, but, then, nobody pays much attention to the new guys and gals. Even the lawyers who courted them quickly get back to serving their own clients and running the firm.

That’s where we come in. We’re marriage counselors, and we’re most effective when called in early. We research and interview new laterals, learn what makes them special, write their story, and then tell it to their partners and the press. We help laterals review and access firm contacts and resources. And we do it fast, the first four weeks they’re at the firm.

The result? New laterals don’t just meet their new partners, they work with them. And there’s no better way to consummate a lateral move than collaboration on a successful client engagement.
